Piranesi : making of utopia

93 works from the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, from the Palazzo Braschi Museum in Rome and from the Galleria Sabauda.At the Galleria Sabauda – Sale Palatine, from December 6th to March 11th 2018, an exhibition – curated by Luigi Ficacci and Simonetta Tozzi – illustrates the work of Giovan Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), a great engraver and architect devoted to the rediscovery of archeology, who applied the visionary matrix of his Venetian formation to an immediate passion for the great ruins of Rome, where he moved in 1740 .The vast production of etchings, characterized by violent lighting effects, has made Piranesi one of the most successful artists in a rapidly expanding artistic market such as the Roman one in the period of the international Grand Tour. The route among his most famous works includes the Vedute di Roma, with amplified architectural perspectives, the imaginative Capriccies still under the influence of Tiepolo and the famous and evocative visions of the series of the Prisons. An imaginary with a great emotional impact, which has continued to this day also through literature, theory and architectural practice and cinematography.
