Caravaggio and the hazardous road to becoming a legend. His alternate legacy
sits somewhere between immediate acceptance and indifference at the beginning
of the seventeenth century, precisely when he was establishing his Baroque tastes.
The exhibition focuses on Merisi’s masterpiece: The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula,
taken from the bank’s collection, after being returned to the Gallerie d’Italia from
the Royal Palace of Milan. At the heart of the exhibition lies an original and telling
comparison between two works of art, both dedicated to the tragic story of Saint
Ursula: Caravaggio’s final painting, created in Naples shortly before his death in
1610, and Bernardo Strozzi’s canvas, created in early adulthood (1615-1618).
